Save Your Skin!

A daily dose of sunshine is very important for maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D within the body but too much exposure can be damaging to the skin so how do you ensure that skin cells stay healthy and protected? Enter sulphur and vitamin C. Sulphur is key in the formation of new skin cells and helps the skin healing process and vitamin C works with this magic mineral to form collagen and helps protect the skin from sun damage.

save your skinA number of good quality supplement companies offer MSM (a naturally-occurring sulphur) in tablets or capsules but many (me included) prefer the quickly-dissolving crystals and here is a great skin-saving smoothie I recently concocted which ticks all the boxes. It is a delicious mix of papaya, kiwi, strawberry and lime which all provide excellent levels of vitamin C and with the addition of the MSM crystals (which are almost tasteless) ensures good levels of sulphur. I have used a Higher Nature product but there are others available in good health shops and online. What’s important is to ensure that half a teaspoon provides at least 1000mg MSM.

My Skin-Saving Smoothie: For 2 large glasses, place half a dozen ice cubes in a blender followed by 1 peeled, de-seeded and roughly chopped papaya, 2 kiwis, peeled and halved, 10 hulled strawberries, 1 lime peeled and chopped, half a teaspoon MSM Crystals and a small teacup of cold water. Blend until silky smooth and if it is too thick for your liking, add a little more water.
